Special Programs

Kym Gym for Kids

KRD offers this program which is focused on the “artist as athlete” and features Robards’ piece “Kym Gym Megalomania” which KRD performed in Beijing, China at The Coca Cola Olympic stage in August 2008.  The performance portion will present an array of Robards’ modern dance works showing a broad range of choreographic dynamics performed by KRD.  The performance also shows an example of a dancer’s warm up and provides opportunities for students to create a short “focus dance” with the company members.  It culminates with a Q&A session. The workshop aspects include classes which highlight the fitness aspects of dance as the skills are transferable to every day well being as well as sports activities and over all physical fitness.  Classes may include the creation by students of their own version of “Kym Gym”.

Be Modern. Be Moved. Be Mentored.

The newly developing program will provide one-on-one mentoring for both adult-to-youth as well as youth-to-youth peer mentoring; year-round programming; and opportunities for youth to engage in leadership opportunities, build their own character through responsible risk-taking and assist their peers in character development. This program has two elements of youth mentoring which includes both a girls and a boys program and serves to educate dance students about community involvement and philanthropic involvement, and also serves to provide opportunities for students who would otherwise not have access to dance.  This program is a two part project which provides learning opportunities for both young female and male dance students at the outreach sites, as well as both teen girls and boys to engage in dance training and work study programs on-site at The KRD School.

Teen Mentors

Interested teen dancers from throughout the community are selected through an application and interview process to be involved in the KRD Mentoring Program wherein they participate for 6-8 week dance sessions at a time as Teen Teaching Assistants along side KRD’s professional Dance Teaching Artists and Faculty.  Teen Mentors themselves receive mentoring from KRD’s professional dancers and the Teen Mentors in turn provide mentoring to their peers. Female dance students will be involved at KRD’s dance program for incarcerated teen girls at The Betty K. Marler Center at The Mount View juvenile detention center.  Male dance students will be involved in a special class at The KRD School in Denver. These select young dancer Teen Mentors serve as positive role models to the teen participants and commit to one 6-8 week session at a time after which they participate in an evaluation process, and may then be considered for additional session participation throughout the year.  Teen Mentors may participate in more than one session (up to four sessions per year) but must commit to at least one full 6-8 session.
